4-d Project October 1, 1995 Report (Report #3)

1. 4-D Meeting - Penn State and Lamont Doherty met on September 18, 1995,to 
discuss the status of 4-d research. See  Attachment #1, "Meeting Notes,"
for details.

2. Penn State Research Team - The research team at Penn State is now in place.
Researchers include:

        a. Amanda Shaw - Database manager, bachelor's degree in
             physics from University of Texas, Austin
        b. Andrew Hoover - First year masters student, bachelor's
             degree in Geosciences from Penn State, summer                    
              experience at Shell Oil, New Orleans
        c. Tucker Burkhart - First year masters student, bachelor's
             degree in Geophysics from Texas A+M, summer experience
             at Meridian Oil
        d. Steven Nelson - Research Assistant, bachelor's degree in
             Geosciences from Penn State
        e. Peter Flemings - Assistant Professor of Geosciences
** note - Hoover and Burkhart have long term industry interest and are
presently seeking summer work experience.

3.  Lamont Research Team
        a.  Albert Boulanger - Network and Visualization.  ex-BBN and NOAA
where he had extensive experience with pattern recognition.

        b.  Wei He - Completing PhD in geopressure detection and 4D
analysis.  will begin immediately upon graduation as Post-doctoral
scientist.  Inversion and seismic modeling expertise.

        c.  LiQing Xu - Computational Scientist.  ex-seismic processor in
Lamont MCS group.  Visualization, code development, and 4d software design
expertise.

        d.  Prof Deng - Aldridge School of Applied Geophysics. 3D FEM
seismic acoustic and elastic models

        e.  Roger Anderson - Overall project management.

4. Recruiting - In regards to employment, you may be interested to know that 
        Penn State has doubled the number of companies recruiting at Penn
State         to four. These companies are Shell,Texaco, Exxon, and Mobil.

5. Status of Contracts and Data Aquisition - Contracts are signed with Exxon
and Texaco. Shell contract within hours of signing. Roger met with Amoco and
Chevron and schedules for their contract signings were worked out.  Amoco New
Orleans would like to be a Beta test-site as well.  

The details for the release of log and seismic data have been planned,
however, no data is yet in hand.  Shell handling final negotiations with
Western over transfer of Western seismic data.  It will go to Shell
Offshroe for preparation into formats accessible to Lamont and Penn State. 
Penn State will simultaneously get logging data.

6.   Beta test versions of the Lamont 4d software were loaded at Exxon EPR and
Shell E&PTC in Houston.  A bug in the SEG-Y reading format is being corrected
this week.

7. Important Dates -
 
        October 8-10 We are part of the Lamont AEScII consortium booth at the
SEG (way back by the restrooms).  Come by and see us.

        October 23 - Next monthly meeting, East Mountain Inn, Wilkes-Barre, 
                Pennsylvania (R. Anderson will reserve and coordinate). 
Industry welcome to attend.

        January 8 - Corporate 4-D meeting in Houston. Please plan
            to attend.  Looking for host, Exxon hosted first meeting in July.
 
 
 
Attachment #1: Summary of Lamont-Penn State Meeting on 9/18/95
 
        The first, monthly Lamont-Penn State 4-D Seismic meeting was held on
September 18, 1995 at the East Mountain Inn in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Present
at this meeting were Roger Anderson, Wei He, Li Chin, and Albert Boulanger of
Lamont Doherty, and Peter Flemings, Andrew Hoover, Tucker Burkhart, and Steve
Nelson of Penn State.
 
        A number of technical issues were addressed at the meeting. The Penn
State contingent covered their procedures for mapping structure and isopach
maps, making time-to-depth conversions, and for constructing various amplitude
maps. The Lamont group fllowed with a discussion of seismic data differencing
methods. After the technical discussion, a list of responsibilities and goals
for the next month was agreed upon.
       Andy Hoover began the discussion of mapping procedures for Penn State.
Sand tops and bottoms are chosen in Mincom's Geolog program by examining
wireline logs (gr and sp) and matching characterisitic wireline signatures.
The location of each sand to is calculated from deviation data and then the
depth and location are exported to Landmark's Z-map + for contouring.  The
isopach maps will be constructed by subtracting the sand bottom from the top,
and locating this thickness halfway between the top an bottom hole position.
        
        Steve Nelson followed with an introduction to time-to-depth
conversions. By multiplying the seismic travel time through the subsurface to
a layer by the velocity of the layer (calculated from check shot data) and
adding in the depth to the sea flor, the depth can be calculated. Although a
simple constant velocity example was shown, a varying velocity structure will
be used in the future.
 
        Tucker Burkhart completed the mapping procedures discussion by
detailing his work with amplitude and amplitude over background maps.
Amplitudes are extracted from sand horizon picks in Landmark's Seisworks by
taking the maximum absolute value ampltude in a 30 ms window around the
horizon. The background is extracted as the average absolute value amplitude
for a hundred ms window around the horizon. These values are then exported to
Z-map for contouring. More investigation into both the methods of aking, and
the usefulness of amplitude over background maps will be done before a final
technique is decided upon.
        
        The Lamont group then described the methods that they are developing
 for the differencing of the seismic surveys. Wei He discussed the
cross-correlation techniques to correct for navigational errors and depth
mismatch.  LiQing Xu then described the reflection strength processing
steps and the extraction of differences between surveys.  Wei He discussed
the seismic inversion to extract velocity and impedance cubes for each
survey and difference them.  Roger then discussed logistics of processing
of new Shell and Western surveys and progress with the acquisition of the
GECO survey (on schedule for early next year). 

        Following the technical discussion, the responsibilities and future
meetings that are listed on the following page were agreed to by the two
contingents.
Responsibilities for Penn State:
 
        1. Map velocity (V), density (r), porosity (f), permeability (k),
        water saturation (Sw), volume of sandstone (Vss),
volume of shale (Vsh), and structure for the JD, KE, and  LF Sands.
        2. Map the JD, KE, and LF sand horizons in all 3 seismic
        surveys.
        3. Produce velocity plots for each seismic survey (velocity
differencing)
        4. Produce amplitude and reflection strength maps for the JD,
KE, and LF
        5. Get TDT logs for block 330 from Pennzoil
        6. Get production data for block 338  - (Paul Hicks)
        7. Load Shell data (well data),
        8. Write monthly report
        9. Call Pennzoil - re: financial commitments.  
        10. Ask Shell Offshore for production, tops, TDT, deviation,
mud weights, and leakoff data for their Field

Responsibilities for Lamont:
 
        1. Transfer re-binned EI330 (original Pennzoil survey), EISOI
(Shell survey), and Texaco seismic surveys to Penn State
        2. Load EI330 to AVS; complete "big" (fault block south of the
f-fault) and "little" (fault block south of the g-fault) LF            
differencing using ei330 dataset
        3. Difference EI330 and EISOI west to the syncline in 331
        4. Load/Deliver seismic data from Shell and WESTERN to Penn State
        5. Get contracts signed
        6. Implement software Beta test with sponsors
        7. Acquire segy and 32 bit Landmark project for Shell area from BTC
        8. Get near/far stacks for Shell and Western data as soon as seismic
cubes are received.
